Muddy Waters Is Dead

Muddy Waters is dead

leaving me holding the Bag

of his dreams

and his tunes

and his clear-eyed high-cheekboned smile

(including an expression which might be reliably translated as

"What else can you show me!")

I first heard "The Best of Muddy Waters" in 1960

The tunes crept slowly/were real slow-- and heavy

The Band screwing the eternal woman-object of a blues singer's dream

Red lights are flickering -- couples rehearsing the first act

of tonights sex drama, moving slow on the dance floor

If you look at them close, real close, you'll notice it's hard to see

anything blissful clutching

White loving black

Black loving white

This dance will never end

We are only now in the beginning
